WHAT IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME (CTS)?
Carpal tunnel syndrome, the most common entrapment neuropathy of the upper extremity, is caused by compression of the median nerve as it travels through the carpal tunnel. Classically, patients with the condition experience pain and paresthesias in the distribution of the median nerve, which includes the palmar aspect of the thumb, index and middle fingers, and radial half of the ring finger. Additional clues include positive physical examination findings, such as the flick sign, Phalen maneuver, and median nerve compression test."1" Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most frequently reported occupational illness, and one of the most costly conditions of the industry. Statistics show that one out of every 1,000 Americans is afflicted, with women manufacturing workers being the most afflicted."2" Now, carpal tunnel syndrome comprises of 51% of all reported job-related illnesses, with 39% of the diagnoses sufferers missing 31 days or more of work."3" This creates total costs well in excess of $30,000 per case."4" CHIROPRACTIC AND CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME (CTS) Not everybody suffering from pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hand and/or wrist is suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Some patients may have problems in their neck, shoulder, elbow, and/or wrist.
