WHAT IS DE QUERVAIN'S TENOSYNOVITIS AND HOW CAN CHIROPRACTORS HELP?
De Quervain's Tenosynovitis (dih-kwer-VAINS ten-oh-sine-oh-VIE-tis) is a painful condition that affects the tendons of the first digit (thumb). People suffering from DQT usually feel pain when they turn the wrist, make a fist, or grasp objects. DQT is usually caused by a repetitive stress condition located at the first dorsal compartment of the wrist at the radial styloid. This causes inflammation of the both the tendons/tendon sheaths of the extensor pollicis brevis (EPB) and the abductor pollicis longus (APL) tendons. Workers performing repetitive activities where they have to routinely use their thumbs to grasp and pinch are most susceptible to suffer from De Quervain's Tenosynovitis. I personally suffered from DQT back in 2016 and I almost quit chiropractic school because I couldn't write with my right hand, or worse I couldn't adjust patients with it. I tried all the modalities (ice, heat, laser, ultra sound), adjustments from several chiropractors, acupuncture, steroid injection and even diet; all failed to give me reasonable relief. It was not until I met the now deceased Dr. Mark Werking who was an extremity expert and guru. He assessed the joints of my hands and wrists, took a few X-Rays and determined that I had a subluxated radius bone. He proceeded to adjust my wrist (after assessing and adjusting my spine) and I have not felt any pain since. Dr. Werking explained that when the radius bone is subluxated posteriorly it causes the extensor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis longus tendons to be stretched out causing them to become inflamed, by adjusting the bone back into place (anteriorly) it would reduce the inflammation and the stretching of the tendons. I owe him a lot for helping me so I can now help countless patients along the way. I took what I learned from him and I've been able to help countless patients suffering from De Quervain's Tenosynovitis.
